What is Power Scaling?

Power Scaling is a proprietary technology London Power by Kevin O'Connor developed to allow the maximum power of an amplifier to be dialed down to whatever level you need.

It is not just like a speaker load box. "Speaker load boxes", "speaker emulators," and "speaker attenuators" are all forms of attenuation that are interposed between the output of a power amp and the speaker. They work for some people but are notorious for sounding "buzzy" at high attenuations.

The key to Power Scaling is that it is applied to the power output tube stage itself,
and so comes before the output transformer.

A 'master volume' will do the same thing only in specific situations. If you only play clean or you only use preamp overdrive or distortion tones, then a 'master volume' will satisfy you. Power Scaling is the best solution for those players who incorporate some amount of output stage "effect" in their sound. This effect can be some clipping, heavy clipping, or just that cusp of compression you get in a tube power amp approaching clipping. Power Scaling allows you to live at that cusp or beyond, but at any loudness you need.

Power Scaling option

Lehnert Amps offers Power Scaling (PS) installed in all our amps. PS may be orderd together with the amp or can be installed afterwards. Please see "Prices" page.
Lehnert Amps do installation of PS in amps of other makes too. Please, email us your request.
We do not sell kits or parts.

Using Power Scaling

  • Turn the Power Scaling knob (PS) & the volume knob on your guitar all way up.
  • Switch the amp on, adjust "Drive" (D) & "Volume" (V) to taste as usual.
  • Decrease PS to "12 o'clock" setting. Adjust V & PS for more overdrive by increase of V & decrease of PS, or
for less overdrive by decrease of V & increase of PS.
  • Adjust D to set the maximum overdrive you want. Then adjust loudness & overdrive with the volume knob
    on your guitar while playing.
  • If it gets too mushy, increase PS & adjust with V to desired level of loudness.
  • For power amp distortion only: start with a low setting of D (say "8 o'clock or less), turn V all way up
then adjust PS to desired level of loudness & adjust the amount of overdrive with V to taste.
If it didn't work out the way you wanted, start all over again with another D setting.

Using Power Scaling with amp without master/drive compensation

  • Turn the Power Scaling knob (PS) & the volume knob on your guitar all way up.
  • Switch the amp on, adjust the amp volume (V) to taste. Decrease PS until the overdrive is right,
follow up with V over & over (it takes a little time for the capacitors in the amp to drain).
  • Increase of PS: it gets cleaner & louder. And vice versa.
  • Increase of V: it gets more dirty & louder. And vice versa.
